Hi Max - Your fly does indeed look very like Roger Farrow's image, labelled Austrosciapus connexus. I've just read a review of the subfamily (Sciapodinae) by Bickel, 1994, and I think we can ID your fly to the subfamily with high confidence, and to the genus Austrosciapus, with quiet confidence. The subfamily features are based on "dumb-bell shaped head" and the wing venation (M vein reaches the margin). The genus Austrosciapus is well-represented in dry sclerophyll forests in our region (extensive museum collections have been made in the region from Bega to the Victorian border). Note that many photos of this subfamily and genus show dark banding across the wings. This initially confused me about the ID of yours, as no such bands are apparent. However, Bickel stresses that this is highly variable between individuals within a species, and is not even consistent with age of the individual. It seems you just chanced upon a particularly clear-winged individual :) Here's a link to the paper, if you're keen: https://australianmuseum.net.au/uploads/journals/17049/50_complete.pdf
I'll add the genus and confirm now.
