Author's notes

Growing on Clear Point, a small grassy headland in Murrmarang NP. The dominant grass here appears to be Zoysia, not Themeda, and the treeless area probably not natural. No flowers, but the leaf shape is distinctive enough to ID it without.

I am told by the RBG that the distinction between Viola hederacea and V. banksii is not clear cut and that leaf variation is probably not a reliable feature.

True, but I think I have my eye in for the species now. I've sent them quite a few banksii specimens from the south coast, and they agreed with my ID on all of them. The sinus on the lower edge of the leaf develops best in shady sites and big leaves, and is less obvious in smaller leaves. These ones have it, but not as deep as it sometimes is. In hederacea the lower edge of the leaf is pretty much a straight line. Also the coastal exposure is typical of banksii - as well as riparian zones, swamp margins, it seems to like headlands.
