At an advanced stage of breakdown with many maggots turning the plant to a liquid state.

Yes Mike this species is a favourite of the invertebrates and micro organisms. Though it's always exciting to find a fungus of this size, even better if you get to it first! Were there Turpentine (Syncarpia glomulifera) trees nearby? Good chance if you visit this area in the future you will see it again. I've found them coming up in the same general area year after year.

I've updated the numbers of plants Pam - as we walked further, more emerged from the gloomy litter. I'll check the tress next time I'm back there.... thanks.
