This species closely resembles C. micaceus and is mainly separated by microscopic characteristics. The spore print from this fungus is black and is one of those loosely called 'ink caps'. It is a decomposer (saprotrophic) fungus a group that appears to be very prevalent after fires. So they are doing great work helping the vegetation communities get back on their feet (roots!!) as they recyle the essential nutrients back into the soil. Also food and habitat for some invertebrates.
