This species has appeared post-fire in at least 2 locations on Pretty Point at Malua Bay. I was pleased to find that a recent revision has taken it out of the exotic H. trionum and made it a native of the NSW east coast and the North Island of NZ. It was growing in both weedy and fairly clean areas of regenerating bush and clifftop scrub. The flowers of this species have less of a purple blotch at the base of the petals than do those of H. trionum (available in the nursery trade so potentially naturalised) or the other native species (H. tridactylites & H. verdcourtii).
