Elateridae (family)

Click Beetles

This is a large family, with at least 70 genera and hundreds of species in Australia. Some are colourful, but many are black or brown. They typically have elongate bodies and all 'bend' where the prothorax meets the mesothorax. The spine-like processes at this joint are usually also quite apparent. They are part of the beetles' snapping, 'click' mechanism.
