Territorial dispute which lasted at least 20 minutes. Northern bank of the Shoalhaven river.

Well done getting such good pics of combat behaviour between rival male water dragons, which is not often seen. It must have been exciting to witness such an event, as they look like they're in their prime and relatively equally matched in size.

These are the subspecies Intellagama l. howittii rather than Intellagama l. lesueurii.
Distinguishing features of Gippslands are greenish hue, lack of dark temporal stripe (behind eye) and orange and black blotches/streaks on the throat/neck and black chest/belly in adult males, rather than red in male Easterns.

As you say, they were very well matched and like sumo wrestlers were using body weight to try and push the other out of an area of about 6 metres across, back and forth. Each 'bout' happened very quickly followed by about 30 seconds locked together. The position of the tails is fascinating, acting as counterbalance to the head to head.
